iCanSea project

Within the iCanSea project, WEDOTECH evaluated several edible seaweed species from the Portuguese coast in different food matrices, selecting the most interesting based on sensorial, nutritional and sustainability criteria.

Canned fish products with seaweeds developed in this project are extremely nutritive and eligible for several health claims. Furthermore seaweeds improve the sensory characteristics of the canned products in terms of both flavour and texture.

The iCanSea project was developed in a partnership between La Gondola, WEDOTECH and ISEP, and co-financed by Operational Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization, Portugal 2020 and the European Union through FEDER (Ref. 003171), from July 2015 to June 2017.

WEDOTECH’s role included the idea, project conception and management, application to Portugal 2020 funding, seaweed research, technical development of food products, products validation, and a pro-active and effective role in the communication of the project’s results. Project results were presented at television (RTP1 and Porto Canal), at the Nutrition and Food National Conference 2017, in a workshop at Workshops Pop Up Porto and at the Food & Nutrition Awards 2017.
